The Role of Social Media

Q 1 - I do not think that social media is an opportunity to become “unpaid shaming interns.” Social media is an opportunity to connect, share ideas, and educate oneself. Yes, social media can become a breeding ground for unethical advertising and propaganda. However, I do not think it is fair to outright dismiss the benefits of social media. During this past year, social media was the only opportunity for people to stay connected to one another. So although there are negative sides to social media, there are also plenty of positive aspects as well.

Q 2 - Last year, my Instagram feed became a virtual cry for help. Ignorance surrounding racism in America became apparent. Social media can provide online resources to websites, Gofund me pages, petitions, book recommendations, and movies and tv shows. Social media has given a voice to people who may not have been heard otherwise. Social media is education. Social media is connection. Social media is a place to be heard and to listen!!

Q 3 - I think individuals’ approaches to socialization in general determines how they interact with social media.Yes, I think it is possible to find like minded individuals on social media. I think you can foster meaningful relationships with individuals. Social media is a form of expression. Each person’s usage and approach tells a small part of them. I think if you approach a platform with this key idea in mind, then you are able to be more open minded to individuals.
