Social Wellbeing Q1-Q3
Started by mrosenbergmrosenberg
1) Social media has enabled people to shame and bully others, but has created opportunities to connect and interact with others. There is toxic language on social media that can harm many on it in the real life since the internet takes out the human component of discourse. However, social networks have allowed humans to create social webs and connect with old friends in ways that were impossible 20 years ago.
2) Social media allows previously marginalized and voiceless people to speak out. It gives people a voice to address injustice. It also allows journalists and reporters to alert people of wrongdoing among powerful people. There is more accountability for governments and people of means.
3) Social media has created endless ways to connect with friends, old and new, but many parts of social media can become echo chambers and an unpopular opinion can be silenced by the masses. While demonization happens on social media, there are also harmless social interactions on social media that many people enjoy.
