Social Media Dehumanization

  1. I think that social media sites have the ability for people to become "unpaid shaming interns". I think this is so because when people view something as wrong or harmful, they are quick to point it out to others. In terms of Twitter, people are quick to retweet their thoughts and opinions, whether it is harmful towards the original person or not. I think that when this happens, people forget that they are verbally attacking another human and it becomes an inhumane trait that can't be erased, since the original person would have already seen it.
  2. Some benefits of social media in terms of providing opportunities for the democratization of justice by are people responding to a tweet in a respectful manner or reporting the tweet if they deem it to be offensive or harmful content. If people take these actions then twitter and social media in general can become more of a supportive place for people instead of it being a place where others are being torn down and dehumanized for a thought or comment they might've had.
  3. There are ways of meeting "nice people like us" by talking to people on twitter or other social media platforms. You could also like the content that like-minded people share on these platforms. I also think that it is a place that offers opportunities for us to approve of each other and validate each other and our feelings, but sometimes it can be a place that demonizes someone else, and that has to change. I think that if people reported these thoughts or comments by others or even correcting the person's thought of view by commenting on the original post, then the person can learn from their mistakes.
