Q#1: To me, social media sites are NOT just opportunities for people to become “unpaid shaming interns". Social media sites have been mediums for many positive platforms that have benefited many people- from providing news, science, sports, fashion, and other cultural breakthroughs and updates, to reconnecting with friends we have not known about for a long time, and giving opportunities for people to promote their original ideas and even small businesses. While many people thrive on being disrespectful by putting down or shaming others, many others keep positive and supportive attitudes.
Q#2: Some of the benefits of social media in terms of providing opportunities for the democratization of justice are: it provides a common site/community where people all over the world with the same beliefs about justice can unify, support one another and resonate their stand together, gaining more influence. Many organizations that advocate justice for different sectors of the marginalized, have their own pages in social media websites so people can contribute to their posts and powerful and influential people will hopefully give them attention and support them.
Q#3: Based on my experience, yes, there are ways of meeting "nice people like us"- like through Linkedin, where I have had opportunities for my career and dating websites. In the bigger picture, there is no perfect world that anyone should think social media will ever get to. As humans, we both get-along with those whom we can relate to and vice-versa; and this has been happening long before social media ever existed. With social media, we just have to be careful that what we post can be re-posted so quickly to the whole world.
