Online gaming is so popular because the world we live in revolves around technology. If you take a look around people are either glued to their phones or computers. The younger generation does not know what it was like before cell phones existed. Drawbacks to being engaged in these activities include being more isolated from family and friends and not being as connected as one could to the real world. As with anything, moderation is key. It's up to the individual to decide how he/she wants to spend personal time. Technology offers many opportunities to learn; however, I would categorize online games as passive pastimes.
