Question #1. Why is online gaming so popular? Are there drawbacks to being engaged in these activities? Do you think they offer opportunities for learning or are they just passive pastimes?
On-line gaming is popular especially among the younger generation because of several reasons like easy accessibility, affordability and a means to escape reality. There are definitely, drawbacks to being engaged in on-line gaming like becoming distracted from work/responsibilities; becoming physically (exhausted), psychologically/ emotionally (irritable, impulsive) affected; cyberbullying and money scams. Some claim that on-line gaming may improve physical coordination, multi-tasking skills, problem-solving skills and educational on-line games can effectively engage students’ learning.
Question #2. How do you manage your study schedule when faced with doubt about your capacity to engage, learn, and succeed?
Things can definitely be overwhelming whether it’s doubt, exhaustion or other dominating emotions. A few coping measures I usually do are: taking a step back and taking breaks like exercising, watching TV, calling my Mom- anything to make my mind and body relaxed; another is I psych myself about the ultimate goal of completing my courses and graduating.
Questions #3. What do you do to help yourself remember new things? For example, do you create concept maps to link connected ideas? Share some of your ideas.
Since I was a young student, I’ve always depended on planners/calendars to keep myself organized. Back in the 80s/90s, there were only paper planners; now I rely on my phone. I include reminders about new things at work and graduate school. When having to learn or “re-learn” content for instruction, I create graphic organizers, take down many notes, and compare information on the most credible websites.
